“Eventually I’m going to end up in a smaller community practicing rural medicine…that’s just what my lifestyle and preferences lead me to.”

Natalie Hart grew up in Cozad, Nebraska. When this third-year medical student finally hangs out her shingle she hopes to do so in a small town. It’s where her heart is.

“I grew up in a small town and I really like the atmosphere—it’s a great place to raise a family,” she said. “I’m trying to find something that will allow me to live in or near a small town.”

That something just might be family practice medicine.

“With family medicine you get to know the whole family. I enjoy seeing the patients and developing a relationship with them…Learning all aspects of their health as compared to just seeing them one time for one problem.” Without a scholarship Natalie would have to rely more on her parents than she would like. If she had been offered scholarships elsewhere and none at UNMC, Natalie would still be at Nebraska due to its emphasis on primary care and rural medicine.
