For his ‘Jeannie With the Dark-Brown Hair'

Marv Welstead met his love – his "Jeannie With the Dark-Brown Hair" – almost 80 years ago.

He was a junior at Fremont High. She was a beauty in the grade below. He saw her walking home for lunch one day and played keep away with her hat.

He could skate backwards. He worked as a skate boy at the Fremont Roller Rink, that's why. One night, he saw Jeannie walk in there with a date, a farm boy who couldn't skate backwards.

Or barely skate at all.

So Marv devised a plan to keep her away from her date.

Husker I-back from LA proud he came here

Terrell Newby came to Nebraska to play football.

"That was my biggest recruiting tool," the Husker running back from Los Angeles said this past spring, standing on the Hawks Center turf after a practice.

But it wasn't the only recruiting tool.

World Leaders Camp

Camp makes a world of difference

The chopsticks gave her cramps.

"I'm not too good at it," UNK freshman Paige Phillips said during a break from a hands-on lesson.

She laughed.

"I've never had to eat with chopsticks before."

Paige was one of 16 incoming UNK freshmen who traveled to campus this past July for the World Leaders Camp, a five-day, all-expenses-paid cultural experience aimed at making freshmen aware of study-abroad opportunities to pursue in college.

Paige came from Hemingford, Neb., a tiny farm town in the Panhandle.

It's a great place to grow up, she said. Everyone knows everyone. Her high school class had only 22 kids.

But coming from such a tiny town, she said, fueled her desire to travel the world.

An especially loyal employee

You feel it right away when you start working at Union Pacific, she says – the culture of caring for others and for the community.

You feel it, she says, when you step on the elevator and there stands an executive, acting like just another part of the team.

You feel it, and you realize that this culture is making you a better person, too.

"I feel very proud to work for a company that isn't only focused on their bottom line," UNO graduate Trisha Ponce says. "They care about their communities, and they are making positive impacts. That has really helped to shape my loyalty to Union Pacific and in turn, my work ethic."

And there's a reason she feels especially loyal.
