The Campaign for Nebraska: Unlimited Possibilities

Generous donor was born. He lived. He gave.

Don Swanson keeps a small treasure in a box in his bedroom.

"I wouldn't ever think of parting with it," the 91-year-old says. He smiles.

It's a piece of shrapnel.

Learn more of his great story.

UNO Wolfpack helps son follow his dad

UNO sophomore DJ Carlson knows where he's going.

He wants to be a navigator.

He wants to be an officer in the Air Force and have a long military career like his dad, who retired as a master sergeant at Offutt Air Force Base, and like his two grandfathers. (His mom's dad did two tours of Vietnam and actually fought in the unit featured in the Mel Gibson movie We Were Soldiers.)

"I want to be just like my dad, honestly," DJ says. "The Air Force was a huge part of my growing up – that military tradition."

DJ is a cadet in UNO's Air Force ROTC Detachment 470. The detachment – also known as "the Wolfpack" – was established at UNO in 1951.

Learn how Wolfpack alumni are helping DJ reach for the sky.

A short story about helping UNK's storm-struck library

After the April storm, UNK staff member John Falconer stood in shock as he looked at the Calvin T. Ryan library on campus.

"The northeast corner of the building was peeled open like a soup can," he recalled.

But he was even more shocked when he saw how the water and wind had damaged thousands of the books inside.

Read more of the story (and help write a happy ending).

Donors turn lifelong nursing dream into reality

Not long ago, UNMC nursing student Myrranda Essex was going through some old files from high school. She found her first resume, the one she wrote for class her freshman year.

This was her "education objective":
Obtain my Bachelor's Degree in Nursing and become a Registered Nurse.

Following your dream can be difficult, said Myrranda, who will graduate from UNMC's nursing division in Scottsbluff next May.

But a network of support makes the burden easier to bear.

Thank you

"I am very grateful to have received this scholarship and I will work hard to make good use of it. Receiving this scholarship helped me answer the question as to whether or not I would be able to attend college. Thank you very much for the opportunity to attend the University of Nebraska."
