The Campaign for Nebraska: Unlimited Possibilities

With our appreciation

The stories in this month's newsletter are all about people saying thank you. And we say it, too: Thank you for all your support in 2013.

As we enter the final year of the Campaign for Nebraska, we want to thank you for making a difference for students and faculty and programs at the University of Nebraska.

Happy New Year!

UNK poet remembers white shadows in the grass

The boy's feet disappear in the dust.

With each step, they sink until he can see them no more and then he pulls them up, watching the dust fall away. It's the Dust Bowl days in Custer County, Neb., years deep into the Great Depression. Ansley, the closest town, is a long way from his grandmother's farm. But the boy loves these summer walks beside her.

The kingbirds sing in the small cemetery on the edge of town, and so does she:

You take the high road and I'll take the low road and I'll be in Scotland before ye!

Only happy songs.

Find out who that boy grew up to be.

Wife, mother, grateful scholarship recipient says thank you

Emily Sulzle grew nervous.

The young Lincoln woman had wanted to thank her scholarship donor in person. But when the time came to meet for lunch in Omaha, Emily feared she wouldn't know what to say. She'd been a stay-at-home mom and a yoga instructor for so long that she felt unprepared.

She'd taken all of her courses online, studying after the kids were in bed.

"So I was really nervous to meet her," Emily says, "but I shouldn't have been."

To her surprise, they had so much in common.

Scholarship will make her a better doctor

Third year UNMC College of Medicine student Paige Lundy understands the importance of scholarships. They allow her to focus on her studies and not her finances.

They allow her and other medical students like her to become better doctors.

"Thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart, because you're going to make me a better doctor."

UNL student helps to light the night in Madagascar

UNL biological systems engineering senior Keith Ozanne says he doesn't have words enough to thank all the donors for what they've given him.

If they were in front of him, he'd tell them this:

"Thank you for giving me such an amazing and rich college experience. Without you, I probably would have led a very different path up until now."

A path that might not have led him to Madagascar.

Thank you

"I am very grateful to have received this scholarship and I will work hard to make good use of it. Receiving this scholarship helped me answer the question as to whether or not I would be able to attend college. Thank you very much for the opportunity to attend the University of Nebraska."
